This expedition offers an in-depth experience of Bhutan combining different day hikes with a diverse insight into country’s culture as we drive from west to east via central valleys. The trip includes varieties of experiences, starting out by car from beautiful Paro valleys, your journey eastward through the Bhutan capital city Thimphu and then the picturesque valleys of Punakha, Phobjikha Valley and Trongsa. You will spend a couple of days in the spectacular valley visiting the sacred and ancient old temples that dot the valley, and take exurssions to villages.

DAY 1: ARRIVR PARO (2280m)
Flight into Paro with Druk Air, Bhutan’s national Airline is spectacular. The flight takes you over the great Himalayas, offering most beautiful scenery of the world’s highest peaks. As you enter Paro valley, you will see the Paro Dzong (fortress) on the hillside overlooking the Paro Chu (river), with Ta Dzong, formerly a watch tower and now National Museum, above it. On arrival you will be greeted by our representative from Yeoong Travels. Evening freely stroll through the market and mingle with the local people and visit shops.

DAY 2: PARO EXCURSION
Your day will start visit to auspicious Kyichu Lhakhang, a scared monument pinning down the left foot of a treacherous ogress, which is built in 659 A.D by the Tibetan king Srongsen Gampo. This Monastery is one of the 108 monasteries built across the Himalayan region by the Tibetan King to subdue the Demoness that lay across the Himalayan region. The rest of the monasteries lie in other neighboring countries; visit Drugyel Dzong the imposing fortress which was the strategic vantage point for numerous defeat of invading Tibetan armies and here in clear weather can view the spectacular view of mount Jomolhari 7314 meters.
In the afternoon drive to the beautiful valley to the watch tower or locally known as Ta-Dzong. The third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck housed it into the National museum in the 1960s. The seven floor museum highlights various aspects of Bhutanese culture and history dating back to the 7th century. A short walk downhill to the Rinpung Dzong itself which serves as the administrative center and school for monks, and walk further down crossing the cantilever bridge into Paro Town.

DAY 3: HAA VALLEY EXCURSION (2800m): 60 KM/APPROX 2HR
Today excursion to Haa Valley perhaps with picnic lunch, you will drive over Chele La, 3822 meters pass through the forest of blue pines, fir, and oak. On the clear weather you will see mountain Jomolhari 7314 meters, other snow capped and beautiful valley below the pass. Explore nearby mountains dotted with the colourful prayer flags and blanked with dwarf rhododendrons.
After a picnic lunch, you will drive further down and arrive at Haa Valley which is sacred by the existence of Meri Piensum, three small mountains symbolizing Rigsum Gonpo: Jampelyang (manjushri), Chana Dorji (vajrapani) and Chenrizi (avaloketeshvara). You can discover the remote village which will take 30 minutes walk and stroll in town later. You will also visit Lhakhang Karpo “White Tenple” and Lhakhang Nagpo “Black Temple”. Evening drive back to Paro and stroll in town and visit shops.

DAY 4: PARO TIGER’S NEST HIKE
Today’s day will begin driving back to north of Paro town to take a stunning hike on foot to visit the Taktshang Goemba or Tiger’s Nest viewpoint. Your hike to Taktshang from the road point will take through the well maintained path which is quite uphill and it takes around 3-4 hours at an average walking speed. The trail climbs through beautiful pine forest, many of the trees adorned with Spanish moss, and an occasional grove of fluttering prayer flags. You stop for a rest and light refreshments at the Taktsang cafeteria.
This incredible monastery clings to the edge of a sheer rock cliff that plunges 900 meters into the valley below. Legend has it that Guru Padmasambhava, the tantric mystic who brought Buddhism to Bhutan in 747 AD, flew here on the back of a flying tiger Dorji Drolo, said to be his consort.

DAY 5: PARO - THIMPHU (2320m): 65KM/APPROX 1HR
Morning drive to Thimphu on arrival you will visit to National Memorial Chorten, a stupa dedicated to world peace and prosperity in 1974 in memory of the Third King of Bhutan; the Kingdom’s rich culture at the National Library; the National Institute of Zorig Chusum where students undergo training course in Bhutan’s thirteen traditional arts and crafts; Folk Heritage Museum which will provide an insight into traditional Bhutanese farm house and rural past through exhibits and documentation of rural life.
After lunch visit Changangkha Lhakhang, a fortress likes temple which lies perched on a ridge above Thimphu; Taken Preserve to see the rare national animal of Bhutan. This animal is chosen as the national animal of Bhutan for its uniqueness and its association with the country’s religious history and mythology. A further drive towards the BBS tower will provide a bird’s eye view of the capital; visit nunnery temple and followed by a visit to Tashichho Dzong or “the fortress of the glorious religion” which is Bhutan’s administration and religious centre and houses the throne room of His Majesty the King of Bhutan, other Government offices. It is also the summer residence of Je Khenpo or Chief Abbot.

DAY 6: THIMPHU – PUNAKHA (1300m): 77KM/APPROX 2 ½HR
Your journey continues with travels to the east onwards to Punakha through some of the Kingdom’s richest agricultural land and most dramatic river valleys. En route you will stop over Dochu La, the 3050meter pass, snow-capped eastern Himalayan ranges can be seen on a clear day. Prayer flags will flutter you over the pass deeper into the essence of Bhutan. The beauty is further enhanced by the Druk Wangyal Chorten – 108 stupas built by the eldest Queen Mother. Once you cross the pass, you wind down into a warm fertile valley. Before reaching to Punakha will stop at Mitsina village to visit Chimi Lhakhang the auspicious fertility monastery dedicated to Divine Madman will take you 20 minutes walk through the rice fields.

DAY 7: PUNAKHA (1300m)
Today you will drive north of Punakha Valley following the Mo Chu and will hike up to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, the fine example of the Bhutanese architecture and art.
Evening visit Punakha Dzong which stands majestically at the junction of the two rivers- Pho Chu ‘Male River’ and Mo chu ‘Female River’. The dzong is said to be the most beautiful of in Bhutan; it is an excellent structure with intense artwork, and the winter residence of the Je khempo (chief abbot). Also this is the second dzong built in Bhutan by Shubdrung Nawang Namgyel in the year 1637.

DAY 8: PUNAKHA - TRONGSA (2316m): 135KM/APPROX 5HR
Heading out from the abode of Punakha you will drive to Trongsa passing over Pele La, 3390 meters pass. Trongsa forms the central hub of the kingdom and is historically the place from where attempts at the unifying the country were launched. As you continue onwards you can view the unbelievable gigantic Trongsa Dzong, an architectural Wonder! Trongsa medieval watch tower and the great Mangde Chu enhance the Trongsa dzong in its exceptional gorgeous.
In the afternoon you will visit Trongsa Dzong, the dzong was built in 1648; it was seat of power over central and eastern Bhutan. Both the first and second kings ruled the country from this ancient seat. All the five kings were invested as Trongsa Penlop the Governor prior to ascending the throne, presently the administrative seat of the district and the home of the monastic school. Ta Dzong preached above the Trongsa Dzong this is watchtower which once stood guard the Trongsa Dzong. This is now restored from ground up and it is the museum presenting the rich historical and religious legacy of Trongsa Dzong.

DAY 9: TRONGSA – BUMTHANG (2600m – 4000m): 68KM/APPROX 2 ½HR
After breakfast you will drive to Bumthang passing Yotong La, 3425 meters pass. Here you get your first glimpse of the Black mountains and high Himalayan Mountains such as Jomolhari are in view and pass is marked by hundreds of prayers flags. Then your journey continues through the fertile valley and hilly forests. Along the way you will stop at a yathra the textile weaving handloom, where the yathras are designed with distinct patterns and you can watch some of the weavers at their looms.

DAY 10: BUMTHANG (2600m – 4000m)
You will enjoy a full day to explore the fascinating valley of Bumthang, the religious heartland of the nation and home to some of the oldest Buddhist temples. The visit to holy places and monuments will include Jambay Lhakhang, one of the oldest tembles built in 7th century by the Tibeten King Songtsen Gampo followed by Kurjey Lhakhang which consists of three main separately built temples surround by 108 chortens (stupa) symbolic of each joint of the human body.
A short hike across the suspension bridge will lead you to Tamshing Lhakhang built in 1501 You will find the ancient religious paintings of One Thousand Buddhas and Twenty One Taras (female form of Bodhisattavas). In the afternoon you will visit Jakar Dzong, known as the ‘Castle of the White Bird’. Evening stroll freely in town.

DAY 11: BUMTHANG – MONGAR: 198KM/APPROX 8HR
Today you will begin your travel to eastern Bhutan is quite long, which is different from western and central Bhutan in terms of progress and lifestyle. Also the route is quite scenic and, including a short stop at Ura village. You can enjoy the leisurely drive to destination.

DAY 12: MONGAR - LHUNTSHE (1524m): 76KM/APPROX 3HR
Today day excursion to Lhuntshe, it is one of the most isolated districts in Bhutan. The landscape is spectacular, with stark cliffs towering above river gorges and dense coniferous forests. The region is famous for its weavers, and their distinctive textiles are generally considered to be the best in the country. The Kurtoe region of Lhuentse is the ancestral home of the monarchy. A statue of Padmasambhava 148 feet 30 foot high lion throne and 17 foot high lotus seat in the form of Guru Nangsi Zilnoen is being built in Takela, Lhuntse to bring peace and harmony to the world as prophesied by Lord Buddha. This will be the world largest statue of Guru Padmasambhava. Overnight stay at Hotel, Mongar.
DAY 13: MONGAR – TASHIGANG: 90KM/APPROX 4HR
Today you will start early your first visit will be Mongar Dzong, which is more modern than most dzongs in Bhutan though architecturally it looks the same, having been built at the request of the third king in 1953. We will then head to Trashigang, passing through several villages.
En-route we will track up to the Drametse Goempa 16th century monastery which is about 18km. Drametse is the largest and most important monastery in the Eastern Bhutan and houses of laymonk. From there we can have a great view of eastern Bhutan. Now we will drive back down to the main roads which soon open into wide valley with the rushing river Gumri Chu and we will continue drive to Tashigang.
Evening freely stroll through the town, absorbing the culture of eastern Bhutan. If you wish to experience lifestyle of the local farm house of Bhutanese farmer, we can prepare meals yourselves, guide and the host will help how to prepare “Emadatse”, which is curry made of cheese and chilies.
Also learn to cook the dried beef and red rice which is the staple food of Bhutanese. In the evening, enjoy the dinner prepared by you with “Ara”, a local wine which is a brewery of rice and wheat. If you wish, you can also try to prepare it using a simple homemade distillation apparatus.

DAY 14: TASHIGANG – TASHIYANGTSE: 52KM/APPROX 2HR
You will drive to far-east of Bhutan and boarder to Arunachal Pradesh in India.
On the way you will stop at Gom Kora ; one of biggest festival held in every beginning of spring called Gom Koar Tshechu “Festivals of circumambulates”, it is said that Guru Rinpoche meditated in this place to subdue a demon that dwelt in a big rock. A temple was then built.
You will continue drive to Chorten Kora with stop at Duksum the small town where many villagers come for shopping. Chorten Kora, it is similar to the stupa of Boudhanath in Nepal and was built in 1770. During the second month of lunar calendar and an interesting celebration known as “kora” takes place here people from neighboring Arunachal Pradesh also join in the festivities.

DAY 15: TASHIYANGTSE– BUMDILING EXCURSION: 12KM/APPROX 5HR WALK
Today you will hike to Bumdeling, where the rare black-necked cranes visit from Tibet in every winter on the sandbanks of Kulong river. They arrive in huge flocks in early November. You can also further hike to Rigsum Goemba – the temple of three god – Compassion, Power and Knowledge.

DAY 16: TASHIYANGTSE – TASHIGANG
In the afternoon, we will visit Tashigang Dzong, the Dzong precariously hugs a spur at more than 400 m, jutting out over the Gamri River. The Dzong commands a remarkable view of the surrounding countryside. Built in 1659 A.D. it is practically impregnable, protected on three sides by the river and ravines, and from behind by the mountains. It serves as the administrative seat for the district and part of the Dzong is occupied by the local monastic community.

DAY 17: TASHIGANG
Today excursion to Rangjung where we can visit the Rangjung Yoedselcholing Monastery founded by the reincarnate Garab Rinpoche, then drive for a while and from the road point start three hours exploratory walk to Radhi Village, which is famous for the raw silk. There you can explore the nearby village and see the vast cultivated land rice and maize. You can also see the women folks weaving a tapestry of textiles with raw silk. We can also visit the nunnery monastery and meet the nuns, they will be happy to see you. In the evening you will drive back to Trashigang.

DAY 18: TASHIGANG – SAMDRUPJONKHAR 175KM/APPROX 6HR
You reach to eastern end of Bhutan, if you are schedule to fly out of the country, it will long drive back to Paro but we can tailor your itinerary with night halt at Bumthang and Phobjikha Valley. If you choose to exit Bhutan by driving into India, Guwahati is the nearest Airport from Bhutan boarder town Samdrup Jonkhar where you can to International Airport in India.
En route you can stop at Khaling, it is famous for handloom development project. You will come across many beautiful landscape, villages and houses.

DAY 19: SAMDRUPJONKHAR DEPARTURE
Morning you will help by Yeoong Travels representative with Bhutan exit formalities and entry to Indian for your onward journey.
